Barker Road Middle School
(Formerly Pittsford Middle School, Barker Road Elementary and Barker Road Junior High School)

Grades:   6-8
Enrollment: Approximately 700
Built:  1967

The Barker Road Elementary/Junior High School was completed in 1967 as a combination elementary school and junior high school. It was set on a 44-acre property on the South side of Barker Road purchased by the district in 1965. The single-building facility was comprised of two completely independent educational units—a one-story elementary school and a two-story junior high with a central core containing an auditorium, swimming pool, kitchen, two independent cafeterias, heating plant, and custodial areas.

Elementary students at Barker Road Elementary School brought their lunches to school when the school opened in September 1967 as the cafeteria was still under construction. The cafeteria and gymnasium portion of the school continued under construction during the 1967-68 school year.

The junior high portion of Barker Road School was completed in 1968 and opened for school in September of that year. Lunches in the school cafeterias in the 1968-69 school year cost 35 cents. With the beginning of the 1968-69 school year, the elementary section of the school housed 875 students and the junior high was the school home for 600 students in grades 7, 8 and 9.

In 1984, the elementary side of Barker Road School was closed due to declining enrollments in the school district. The junior high portion of the school became Pittsford Middle School, the school site for all district seventh and eighth grade students.

In 1994, grade levels in Pittsford elementary schools were adjusted to kindergarten through 5th grade, moving district sixth graders into Pittsford Middle School. Eight classrooms were added to Pittsford Middle School with completion in 1995 to accommodate increasing enrollments.
